Things To Know For Your Long Distance Move

Moving a few blocks away from mom and dad is one thing, but if you are moving across country and have decided that you need to bring a lot of your personal belongings with you, this is not the time to wing it with a few piles of clothes in your trunk. Here are some things to know about your long distance move.

You Should Choose a Long Distance Moving Company

Certain companies cater more to short or long-term moves. The rates per mile can vary as can the additional labor hours. Ideally, for a long distance move, your company will want to help you pare down the number of movers so that you don't end up paying a premium for the drive time.

Get quotes from various long distance moving companies. Also look at the reviews of the company, though, to see if they tend to charge over or under their initial quote. Since this is just an estimate and many things can come up the day of the move, you simply want to look at quotes that have a reasonable amount of wiggle room in them and are reasonable per hour or mile.

Make Sure You Have Good Insurance

This is especially true when the move time is overnight or longer. You would not want to get your stuff stolen while you're asleep at a motel. To keep this from happening (or at least to reduce the possible losses), keep all valuables with you in your room as you sleep. Don't leave the tempting visual of a moving truck or a charging cord in the front window of your car. Also ensure that your long distance moving company has excellent insurance.

Pare Down Your Personal Belongings As Much As Possible

In general, consider how every additional pound of stuff might mean that you need to have more movers or translates to you paying for more hours of service. Do you really need to bring a box full of all of the canned goods you've had in your pantry since 2008? What about that suit you only wore once? Does it need to take up space in your new place as well? The less sentimental you are about bringing a lot of items along with you to the other side of the country, the more opportunity there is to get new items that will define this new chapter in your life.
